APTD and CPTD: one model, different emphasis
Pick the right level from the start.
ATD offers two credentials: the APTD (Associate Professional in Talent Development) and the CPTD (Certified Professional in Talent Development). Both rest on the same framework, the Talent Development Capability Model. What differs is the years of experience required and which part of the model is emphasised.
The CPTD targets experienced practitioners and covers all three domains, including organisational impact at a strategic level. The APTD targets early- to mid-career practitioners and concentrates on execution: designing learning programmes, delivering training, and the underlying learning science.
If you design and run training but do not yet have the years CPTD demands, the APTD is your level — and what you revise for APTD carries over when you step up, since both rest on the same model.

Eligibility, exam structure, fees and recertification policy are set by ATD and can change. This course helps you orient and revise; before registering, check ATD's official site. Content current as of August 2026.
Key takeaway: APTD and CPTD share the Capability Model; APTD stresses execution, CPTD adds the strategic layer.
