Critical thinking isn't nitpicking

Understand what critical thinking actually is.

Many people hear 'critical thinking' and picture disagreeing, finding faults, or being sceptical about everything. That's a misreading. CRITICAL THINKING is the ability to evaluate information and arguments systematically before believing or deciding — including examining YOUR OWN thinking.

A good critical thinker isn't someone who always says 'I disagree'. They're someone who asks: 'Where's the evidence? Is there another explanation? What am I assuming?' — and who is willing to change their mind when the evidence is strong enough.

Why this is a work skill

Every day you decide on incomplete information: should I trust this number? which option is riskier? does this explanation hold up? Critical thinking is what keeps you from being led by a pretty chart or a loud voice.

Key takeaway: Critical thinking is systematic evaluation to get closer to the truth — including reviewing your own reasoning.
