- Choose an activity type that fits the objective
- Apply the experiential learning cycle (Kolb)
- Avoid design traps for adults

The experiential learning cycle (Kolb)
Have a frame to design experiential activities.
The 4 steps of Kolb's cycle
- EXPERIENCE: have learners DO a real situation (role-play, exercise, simulation)
- REFLECT: ask 'what happened? what did you notice?' — let them ponder
- GENERALIZE: draw out principles/lessons from the experience ('so what's the general rule?')
- APPLY: plan to use that lesson in real upcoming work
Don't skip the reflection step
A common mistake: run an activity then jump straight to the next content. Experience doesn't turn into a lesson by itself — the REFLECT and GENERALIZE steps are where learning actually happens. An activity without a debrief is just a game.
Key takeaway: Kolb: Experience → Reflect → Generalize → Apply; the debrief is where learning happens.
