Using AI tools isn't transformation
Understand a distinction that's constantly blurred.
Plenty of HR teams say 'we've done our AI transformation' when what they mean is that people use ChatGPT to write job descriptions faster. That's TOOL ADOPTION — useful, but fundamentally different from TRANSFORMATION.
Tool adoption makes the same process faster. Transformation changes THE PROCESS ITSELF: if AI can screen and summarise applications in seconds, the question isn't 'how do we screen faster' but 'how should the hiring process be redesigned, and where should recruiters actually spend their time?'.
The distinguishing question
Ask: 'If we removed every AI tool, would our process go straight back to how it was?'. If YES, you're at the tool-adoption stage. Real transformation has changed how the work is organised to the point where you can't simply revert.
Key takeaway: Tool adoption speeds up the old process; transformation redesigns the process and the human roles.
