Three things that change immediately
Know you are entering a different job, not a bigger version of the old one.
The commonest mistake of a new manager is treating the role as a bigger version of the old job: same work, more responsibility. In reality it is a different job, and the skills that got you here are not the skills that keep you here.
Three changes and what you will feel
| The change | What you will feel |
|---|---|
| Your results are now other people's results | The sense of having achieved nothing today, despite being busy all day. This is normal for the first three months |
| Your time is fragmented | No long blocks left for technical work. If you insist on keeping them, you will do that work in the evenings |
| Information reaches you filtered | People weigh what to tell you. You will be the last to hear bad news unless you act on it |
'Busy all day and achieved nothing' is a normal signal
Many new managers conclude within weeks that the role is not for them, because they lose the daily feeling of finishing concrete work. Your results now appear later and through other people — it takes about three months to adjust to that rhythm.
