The content map
Know what you have to learn.
The aPHRi spans the main areas of HR work at FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE level rather than decision-making level. It asks 'what is this concept', 'which step comes first', 'what does this term denote' — not 'in this complex scenario, which option is optimal'.
The weighting of each area is published by HRCI in the Exam Content Outline and reviewed periodically. Download the current version from the official site before planning your revision.
The depth the exam requires
The aPHRi tests whether you can speak the language of the profession. You need to know what turnover is, what steps onboarding involves, how a job description differs from a job specification, how a KPI differs from an OKR. You do NOT need to know how to design a three-factor pay system for a corporate group — that is PHRi and SPHRi territory.
Key takeaway: The aPHRi tests foundational knowledge and professional vocabulary, not complex decision-making.
