HRCI (the HR Certification Institute) is one of the two most respected HR certification bodies in the world, alongside SHRM. Its credentials date back to the 1970s and are widely recognised across the US and many international markets — including multinationals operating in Vietnam.

HRCI offers several levels. The three most common: aPHR (for newcomers, no experience required), PHR (operational — executing HR programs), and SPHR (strategic — planning and leading the HR function).

HRCI or SHRM — which should you take?

Both are respected and recognised by employers. They differ in philosophy: HRCI leans toward TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE and compliance (what you know), SHRM toward BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES through situational items (how you handle things). Many experienced practitioners hold both. If you'll only take one: HRCI suits people who want to prove solid technical grounding; SHRM suits people who lean toward advisory and situational judgement.

Key takeaway: HRCI is one of the two major HR certification bodies; PHR is operational, SPHR is strategic.
