The stakeholder map
Spend your energy on the right people.
The Power × Interest matrix
| Group | Strategy | Interaction cadence |
|---|---|---|
| HIGH power + HIGH interest | PARTNER CLOSELY — turn into a sponsor, co-design | Meet one-on-one monthly; invite to teach/open sessions |
| HIGH power + LOW interest | KEEP SATISFIED — they can block you at any time | Short quarterly updates in the language of business results |
| LOW power + HIGH interest | KEEP INFORMED — they're spreading allies and real users | Involve them in design, make them champions, share success stories |
| LOW power + LOW interest | MONITOR lightly | General communication, no dedicated energy |
The classic energy-allocation mistake
Pouring 80% of your time into the already-supportive group (low power – high interest) because they're pleasant to talk to, while the high power – low interest person doesn't understand what you're doing and cuts your budget in a 5-minute meeting. Whoever can KILL your project needs investment first.
Key takeaway: High power–high interest: partner; high power–low interest: keep satisfied; low power–high interest: champion.
