SHRM-CP vs SHRM-SCP — choose the right credential
Know which level you should sit.
SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) offers two credentials based on the same competency framework — the SHRM BASK (Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge). The difference is the LEVEL OF APPLICATION, not the subject matter.
SHRM-CP (Certified Professional): for operational/implementation roles — executing policy, supporting day-to-day goals, serving employees. SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional): for strategic/leadership roles — designing HR strategy, leading the organization, aligning HR with business goals.
Both exams use the same item types, but the SCP exam leans toward high-level strategic decision-making while the CP exam leans toward application and implementation. This course serves both, and the Situational Judgment section flags when the 'SCP lens' differs from the 'CP lens'.
Quick comparison
| Criterion | SHRM-CP | SHRM-SCP |
|---|---|---|
| Typical role | HR Generalist, Specialist, Coordinator | HR Manager, Director, Head of HR |
| Item focus | Implementation, operations, compliance | Strategy, leadership, organizational impact |
| Experience required | Usually fewer years (by education) | More years in strategic roles |
How to choose your level
Choose by the WORK YOU ACTUALLY DO, not by seniority. If you spend most of your time implementing and operating → CP. If you design strategy and lead → SCP. Always check the latest eligibility requirements on the SHRM site before registering.

Key takeaway: Same BASK; CP = implementation/operations, SCP = strategy/leadership. Choose by your actual work.
