The four steps of GROW

Have a frame to guide any coaching conversation.

The GROW model (Whitmore)

StepGoalSample question
G — GoalClarify what the other person wants to achieve"What do you want to get from this conversation? What's the ideal outcome?"
R — RealityLook squarely at the current state"How is it now? What have you tried? What's blocking you?"
O — OptionsDraw out the choices"What options do you have? What else? What if there were no obstacles?"
W — Will / Way forwardCommit to specific action"What will you do? When? What support do you need? Commitment on a 1–10 scale?"

Resist the urge to 'give tips'

A new coach's biggest temptation is to jump in with solutions at the Options step. Hold back — ask 'what options do you think there are?' first. People commit to THEIR OWN solution far more than to one they're handed. If you truly need to suggest, ask permission: 'I have an idea, would you like to hear it?'

Key takeaway: GROW: Goal → Reality → Options → Will; at Options, let the other person think first before you suggest.
