The three levels of listening
Recognise that most of us listen only at level 1.
Listening isn't an on/off state. There are three very different levels, and most workplace conversation happens at the lowest one.
Three levels of listening
| Level | What you're doing | How the speaker feels |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Internal listening | Listening for your turn; rehearsing your reply | Unheard, interrupted |
| 2. Focused listening | Focused on their content, your own thoughts parked | Respected, heard |
| 3. Global listening | Hearing emotion, tone, and what ISN'T said | Genuinely understood |
A quick test
In your last conversation, can you recall exactly what the other person said — or only what YOU said? If it's the latter, you were listening at level 1.
Key takeaway: Three levels: internal (waiting your turn), focused, and global listening — aim for levels 2 and 3.
