A map of e-learning and blended learning
Step 1 / 3·The forms of digital learning
0/3 steps done
Learning objectives — after this module you will:
- Distinguish the forms of e-learning (synchronous, asynchronous, blended)
- Understand blended learning and when to use it
- Draw lessons from Walmart's VR program
Learn ~6 min
The forms of digital learning
Have a map to choose the right form.
The forms of e-learning
| Form | Characteristics | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous (self-paced) | Learn anytime: video, interactive courses, reading | Standardized knowledge, reaching many, repeated review |
| Synchronous (live online) | Real-time online class (webinar, virtual class) | Discussion, Q&A, interaction that needs real time |
| Blended | Mixes online + in-person + on-the-job | Most serious programs — leverage each form's strength |
| Microlearning | Very short bites (2–5 min), just when needed | Reinforcement, in-the-flow support, spaced review |
Blended usually wins
Rarely is 100% online or 100% offline optimal. A common formula: online for KNOWLEDGE (self-study first), in-person for PRACTICE and INTERACTION, on-the-job for APPLICATION. This is 70-20-10 in digital clothing.
Key takeaway: Asynchronous, synchronous, blended, microlearning — each has a strength; blended is usually optimal.
