The LMS — the operating system of learning
Understand what problem an LMS solves.
An LMS (Learning Management System) is software that manages an organization's learning: where you HOST courses, ENROLL learners, TRACK progress/scores, and REPORT. If content is the 'dish', the LMS is the 'kitchen and restaurant' — where it's served, managed, and recorded.
Core LMS functions
- Store and distribute courses (content, materials, tests)
- Enrollment and permissions: who takes which course, required paths by role
- Tracking: progress, scores, completion, certificates
- Reporting for managers and L&D (who's done, who's behind, what the results are)
- Often integrates with the HR system and supports social/collaborative learning
SCORM and xAPI in 30 seconds
SCORM and xAPI are STANDARDS that let content 'talk' to the LMS. SCORM (older, common): tracks completion and scores inside the LMS. xAPI/Tin Can (newer): can also track learning experiences OUTSIDE the LMS (reading, watching video, simulations, on-the-job) — more flexible. You don't need to code, but you need to know enough to ask a vendor the right questions.
Key takeaway: An LMS stores – enrolls – tracks – reports; SCORM/xAPI are the standards that let content talk to the LMS.
