Three kinds of empathy
See that empathy is more than sympathy.
Empathy isn't one thing. Researchers distinguish three kinds, and effective professionals need all three — especially the third, which is the one most often forgotten.
Three kinds of empathy
| Kind | What it means | The risk of only having this one |
|---|---|---|
| Cognitive empathy | Understanding what someone thinks and their perspective | Understanding but cold; can even be used to manipulate |
| Emotional empathy | Feeling what they feel, 'feeling with' them | Getting swept along, emotional burnout, losing objectivity |
| Compassionate concern | Understanding + feeling + ACTING to help appropriately | This is the kind that creates real value at work |
Empathy is not agreement
You can fully understand why someone is disappointed and still keep your decision. 'I understand why this is frustrating for you, and the decision still has to stand because…' is entirely legitimate. Confusing empathy with concession is why many managers are reluctant to show it.
Key takeaway: Three kinds: cognitive, emotional and compassionate concern — the third (with action) creates real value.
