Delegating
Brief clearly enough that nothing has to be redone.
Five things to say when delegating
- What the finished result looks like — describe the output, not the activity
- Why it matters, and where it leads
- The decision latitude: decide and report, or check with you before deciding
- The deadline, plus a mid-point check if the work is long
- Resources: what they can use, who to ask when stuck
Item 3 is the one most often skipped and causes the most failures
Someone who does not know how far their authority runs will either check back constantly or decide something they should have raised. Say it plainly: 'choose the supplier yourself; if the budget goes over 50 million, come to me.'
