Step 1 / 2·The stage where candidates are most often lost
0/2 steps done

- Do the manager's part during the offer stage
- Prepare for the new joiner's first day
- Complete the final test
Learn ~10 min
The stage where candidates are most often lost
Do not lose someone at the final step.
Four things the manager should do personally
- Call to congratulate as soon as they accept — do not leave this to an automated email
- Stay in touch at least twice during their notice period, without talking about work
- Send in advance what they need so day one is not disorienting: which entrance, who to ask for, what to wear
- Be present on day one and give them at least 30 minutes, however busy you are
The quiet stretch before the start date is the most dangerous
Over those 30 to 45 days their current employer will counter-offer and other offers keep arriving. A message every two weeks from their future manager does far more than the effort it costs.
