The five stages of the integration journey
See onboarding as a continuous journey, not scattered events.
The most effective way to design: map the JOURNEY from the NEW HIRE's perspective, not the department's. For each stage ask three questions: (1) What is the new hire feeling or worrying about? (2) What do they need to know to move forward? (3) Who is responsible for providing it?
This immediately exposes 'gaps' that a departmental process chart never shows — for instance the silence between signing the offer and the start date, exactly when new hires are most likely to accept another offer.
Key takeaway: Design around the five-stage journey from the new hire's view, and hunt for the gaps between stages.
