Six signs and the intervention window

Notice early, while the outcome can still change.

Six signs, in the order they usually appear

  1. A marked drop in offering ideas or challenging in meetings
  2. Doing exactly their own work and no longer picking up extra as before
  3. Less participation in optional activities, including ones they used to enjoy
  4. Questions about leave policy, insurance, or handover procedures
  5. Starting to take scattered single days off midweek
  6. Updating their professional profile or expanding their industry connections
By the final stage the decision was made emotionally before the letter appeared.

Why a counter-offer after the resignation usually fails

By then the person has been through the whole deliberation and has pictured themselves elsewhere. A pay rise addresses the pretext, not the cause, and the proportion who stay and then leave within a year is very high.
