Someone who leaves well is an asset

Do not burn the bridge in the final week.

How an organisation treats someone on their way out is watched very closely by the team, and says more than any statement about culture. Everyone staying is asking: when my turn comes, how will I be treated?

Beyond that, someone who leaves well still refers candidates to you, still speaks well of the place, and a meaningful proportion return a few years later with more experience.

Four things to do in the final week

  1. Do not change how you treat them — do not cut them from meetings or stop sharing information unless genuinely necessary
  2. Run a structured handover, so they have the chance to leave behind something they are proud of
  3. Say a specific thank-you in front of the team, naming what they actually achieved
  4. Message them three months later — that is when you get the honest answer about why they left

The honest answer comes at three months, not at the exit interview

Once settled somewhere new with nothing left to lose, people are far more direct. A message saying 'honestly, was there something I should have done differently?' usually gets an answer worth having.
