Step 1 / 2·A to-standard learning objective

0/2 steps done

Learning objectives — after this module you will:

  • Write learning objectives to the ABCD / SMART standard
  • Use Bloom's taxonomy to pick verbs at the right level
  • Avoid common mistakes in writing objectives
Learn ~6 min

A to-standard learning objective

Grasp the formula for writing measurable learning objectives.

TNA results must be converted into LEARNING OBJECTIVES — statements of what the learner WILL BE ABLE TO DO after the course, not what they 'will understand' or 'will know' (not measurable). The ABCD formula: Audience (who) – Behavior (what they can do, an observable verb) – Condition (under what conditions) – Degree (to what level).

A to-standard example: 'After the course, the barista (A) extracts an espresso shot (B) following the standard process, without prompting (C), reaching temperature and time within the allowed range (D).'

Bloom's taxonomy — pick verbs by thinking level

LevelSample verbs
Remember / Understandlist, describe, explain, distinguish
Applyperform, calculate, use, illustrate
Analyze / Evaluateanalyze, compare, diagnose, recommend, critique
Createdesign, build, develop, formulate

Forbidden verbs

'Understand', 'know', 'grasp', 'be aware' — not observable and not measurable. If you can't think of a way to TEST an objective, that objective isn't written well.

Key takeaway: Objective = ABCD with an observable verb; use Bloom's taxonomy to pick the right level.
