Past behaviour predicts better than stated intent
Move from hypothetical to behavioural questions.
Converting the question
| Hypothetical | Behavioural equivalent |
|---|---|
| What would you do if a colleague would not cooperate? | Tell me about a time you had to work with someone who would not cooperate. What did you actually do, and what happened? |
| Can you handle pressure? | Tell me about the busiest period in your last job. How did you organise it? |
| What is your weakness? | When did you last get feedback that was hard to hear? What did you do afterwards? |
| Are you proactive? | Tell me about something you started that nobody asked for. Why, and what came of it? |
Hypotheticals only measure how well someone talks
Everyone knows the right answer to 'what would you do if...'. A behavioural question forces the candidate to describe a real event, and real events have verifiable detail.
