Four sources of energy
Understand why more sleep is not always enough.
We tend to treat energy as one thing with one remedy: rest. In fact there are at least four different sources, depleted differently and restored differently. Two extra hours of sleep does not replenish a source that ran dry somewhere else.
Which source is empty, and what actually helps
| Signal | Source running dry | What genuinely helps |
|---|---|---|
| Constantly sluggish, catching every minor illness | Physical | Enough sleep at consistent times; light daily movement beats a hard weekend session |
| Short-tempered, overreacting to small things | Emotional | Time with people you actually like; being recognised specifically by someone |
| Cannot focus beyond twenty minutes, everything half-finished | Mental | Cut interruption: notifications off, batch work, protect meeting-free blocks |
| Finishing work and feeling hollow | Meaning | Reconnect the work to the people who benefit from it |
Mental energy drains from interruption, not volume
Many people conclude they are exhausted from doing too much, when what exhausts them is being interrupted constantly. Eight hours of deep work is far less tiring than eight hours cut into thirty pieces. If your calendar has no block longer than 45 minutes, fix that before you think about reducing the workload.
Key takeaway: Four sources: physical, emotional, mental, meaning — each drains and restores differently.
