A 4-step process for SJIs
Choose the 'most effective' action, not the 'absolutely correct' one.
4 steps
- Identify YOUR ROLE (HR) and the core PROBLEM in the situation.
- Ask: which action addresses the root cause while staying fair, respectful, and true to the HR role?
- Eliminate extreme answers: avoiding/doing nothing, overreacting, escalating unnecessarily, showing bias.
- Choose the answer that is PROACTIVE, EVIDENCE-BASED, and PRIORITIZES DIRECT COMMUNICATION before escalating.
Common 'trap' answers
Beware: (1) an action that merely pleases one party while ignoring policy; (2) escalating to the boss/legal before gathering information; (3) ignoring the problem; (4) decisions based on a protected characteristic (age, gender, religion, etc.).
Key takeaway: SJIs: find the proactive, fair action that fits the HR role — never extreme.
